Ramakkalmedu is a hill station located in the Idukki District. It is situated on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu state border and is home to numerous attractions, such as the Periyar Tiger Forest, Munnar, Kuttikanam, Parunthumpara and spice farms.
The name of this site is a combination of the three words 'Ram', 'Kal' and ‘Medu’, meaning Lord Rama, rock and land, respectively. It is believed that Lord Rama visited this place when he was searching for his wife Sita, who was abducted by the king of Lanka, Ravana. During his search, Lord Rama set foot on the tallest rock to look for Sita. This same rock was named as Ramakkal, which eventually came to be known as Ramakkalmedu.
This place also provides beautiful views of the sun rising in the eastern hills and setting on the western mountains. The mountains located adjacent to the site are surrounded by thick evergreen forests that serve as a natural habitat to various birds and animals.
It is recorded that the wind effect of this site is the maximum in Asia as the wind gusts into the hills at a high speed and at very high pressure. The average speed of the wind is around 25 km/hour. Situated at an altitude of around 3560 ft from the sea level, the area is popular for trekking, hiking, paragliding and camping.

Thommankuthu Falls
The Thommankuthu Falls is named after Thomman, a tribal leader, who fell into this waterfall while crossing the river. Known as the Seven Steps Waterfall, this fall has a pool and a cascade after each step. It is located at a distance of around 17 km from Thodupuzha town and has a height of around 1500 m.
It is dotted with numerous caves and thick forests and is considered ideal for various activities like rock climbing, camping and trekking. Boating, horse riding and fishing can also be done.
The Thommankuthu Falls can be reached by taxis or through state operated buses that are easily available.
Kalvari Mount, Idukki
Kalvari Mount, also known as the Calvary Mount, lies in the vicinity of Thekkady, on the way to Kattappana. The mountain provides beautiful views of the Idukki Reservoir as well as the two prominent tribal villages of the region, namely Kamakshy and Mariyapuram. Elephants can also be seen roaming in the forests, near the foothill.
The Malankara Dam, Idukki Hydroelectric Project and Nadukani and numerous tea gardens are present in its vicinity.

Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary
The Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary was established by Dr. Salim Ali, a renowned ornithologist of India, in 1983. It is situated in the Kothamangalam region of the Idukki District and is home to around 500 species of rare birds.
It is covered with thick tropical deciduous and evergreen forests and spreads over an area of 25 sq km. The tributaries of the Periyar River are the prime source of water for animals residing in the sanctuary.
Numerous species of bee-eater, jungle fowl, black-winged kite, falcon-grey, shrike, crimson-throated barbet, Ceylon frog moth and sun bird can be spotted inside the sanctuary. The region is also home to night heron, white-breasted water hen, blue-winged parakeet, rose-billed roller and hornbill. It is a habitat for around 28 species of animals and many species of reptiles, making it an ideal site for birdwatchers and nature lovers.
Animals such as leopard, bear and porcupine are commonly seen near the water bodies, while herds of elephants are occasionally spotted in the thick areas of forest. Reptiles like cobra and python can be seen on the tree trunks and in the holes. The sanctuary also provides shelter to a wide variety of plants, including trees of teak, mahogany and rosewood.
